Best Way to Run Cat5 Cable Multi Level House
A lot of groovy suggestions and ideas in this thread. Allow me add from some experience since I'one thousand now sitting in a firm that was originally wired in 1995.
-I would use Cat 6a (that is the highest Environmental impact assessment/TIA ratified standard that I either know of or tin can find) Shielded twisted pair with a solid core, for the runs that go through the walls. I essentially want something that I can future proof as much every bit possible since running cable again is a pain in the rear and expensive. I wait 10Gbps to go the norm in domicile networking within the next 10 years. Should I await into Cat 7 even though it is not ratified by EIA/TIA? From what I can see it has the potential to go to 40GBps but the fact that it has not been approved by EIA/TIA gives me break.
-1 other thing that I take idea of though is cable conduits in the walls. Something like PVC or something similar. Has anyone washed that before? Office of me thinks that would make cablevision replacement much easier in the future. But please correct me if I am incorrect.
-What virtually other media types like Coax and HDMI or audio cabling (for, say, a dwelling house theater setup). While the main thrust is Ethernet, I effigy that if i is already being run, that I should consider running the other. Please tell me your stories so I can learn from you lot all I really appreciate it. (I know that this crosses a picayune into A/V territory only delight be nice )
-Whatever advice on contractors?
-I desire to be respectful and not sound like a jerk, but please don't talk about wifi solutions for this setup. I fully intend to accept wifi in the home but I desire the various access points to be able to talk to each other through ethernet. I want to only use WiFi for devices that are actually mobile. For everything else, if it is stationary, I want to wire it. Is wiring a home overkill, peradventure, but since I am a tech enthusiast, this is something that I have been wanting to have for a long time, and I wanna get my GEEK on
-Likewise if in that location are whatever other considerations that I take left out, please experience free to comment. Thanks in accelerate
Fifty-fifty though this goes against a lot of what is in this thread, if you're going to run catx wire and no conduit, run the VERY BEST WIRE Y'all Can GET. Don't worry about the standards, just make sure the wire is the best. Case in point is the Megalan 400Mhz wire we ran in my parents firm (where I'm posting from). This was at a time when 100Mhz was the only spec out there as cat5 (not fifty-fifty 5e existed). The wire was 2x equally expensive every bit anything else available. And today, in the rooms where the termination wasn't but utter crap (1"+ unwisted and stripped), at that place is wired gigabit ethernet today that iperfs 900Mbps+. If we would have run but 100Mhz wire, I don't think in that location would accept been enough overhead for gigabit. So the point is, run the best wire y'all tin can because you are right--y'all will non affect it over again. We haven't for 25 years--and my dad gets to enjoy instant streaming because of this since the roku is wired. And that means staples are okay every bit long as they don't hit the wire as you won't exist pulling the wire or the staples out. Run a MINIMUM of 2x runs per room/expanse (I'd personally run 2x to whatsoever jack where y'all want just 1). We spec'd this and there were however messups that left the report without any ethernet in the room. >:| Also, don't forget near putting some runs high up in each room and outside for IP cameras. IP cameras didn't exist dorsum in the mean solar day when my parent'southward business firm was built so we only have analog cameras, but today I'd prep for IP cameras. If you lot're serious about 10G, I'd go alee and wire some pre-terminated in select places if you're not using conduit. Merely be CAREFUL as the other contractors won't know that they can't just yank and jank on the cable like regular ethernet/catx and will break it. I saw a huge apartment building have to rewire half of their units considering of this.
Conduit is a game changer, but it'due south also a huge money pit--typically driving the cost up multiple times. But if yous want the absolute, complete, upgradable setup, conduit is it. The days when copper tin't do it you tin can just bandy in fibre if yous've got conduit. Only the ane affair nigh conduit--don't go skinny stuff. Run at least 1.5" or greater (ii" is peachy). The cost increase is marginal, simply yous'll be able to exercise a lot more runs, and even fully terminated fibre runs with ease. And run it the full length, not just stubs--stubs can be as frustrating as the end point if they're difficult to become to with a fishing wire.
As far equally other mediums, everything is moving to ethernet in some form, even if just using the wiring. Just at that place also ways to get ethernet over other mediums that can be useful such as moca. As a frame of reference we ran 2x coax rg6 to each room at my parent's house and 4x to rooms where nosotros didn't know where the tv would be. And in cases like our study, the cable (if information technology also wasn't left dangling in the clamber infinite), would have been used to bring ethernet to the room via moca.
Communication on contractors--they sucked back in 1995, and even today, they admittedly suck. Even after paying a lot of money for the wiring, we didn't get what we were supposed to, and I'thou going to have to re-terminate almost one-half the jacks in the firm if there is fifty-fifty whatever damn wire left to do so as they cut them so shut to the plate (no keystones--those didn't be either). Unless they're a company that strictly does strucutured wiring for commercial environments and office buildings, don't fifty-fifty look at them as they will mess something upwardly that will make you desire to either not pay them or punch them if you've already paid them. And even these guys may however mess it up if they recollect they tin get away with information technology. If I absoultely HAD to use a contractor, I would just pay the general contractor to run the wire where I need it and leave information technology looped there and terminate it myself or rent a better contractor for the termination and testing.
Other thoughts--don't forget about wiring the outside. In that location are several completely outdoor rated access points that will transform your outdoor spaces as well as things like outdoor rated televisions. Certain you might not exist able to afford one (at least not now), but who knows what the time to come will hold so no reason to limit yourself.
If you get an existing dwelling, forget nearly rewiring it, merely instead focus on using the existing wiring. Y'all tin can become really expert results with moca these days (equally high every bit 2.5Gbps) and powerline tin can likewise assist. There'south even vdsl extenders that can employ erstwhile phone wire. And all of these are usually cheaper than a wiring task. Plus, you lot tin can diagnose and fix it if something goes wrong.
Every bit far every bit central demarc point, brand information technology easy for a cable to get from the outside to that point--have a clear spot in the crawlspace, easy admission via the attic, something and so that contractors won't destroy stuff when they demand to get their wire in. Just at the aforementioned time, don't brand information technology a pain for yourself like hitting the 300ft limit for ethernet but to have the demarc all the way on the other side of the house.
If I had to practice this place again, I would have specified a demarc after thinking out the whole layout, predicted the rise of streaming and drive size increases to place things improve , gotten full walkthrough renderings for the whole firm with every jack in its concluding identify (which would have defenseless 2 critical floorplan mistakes we live with now) and would have helped visualize where the best location would exist in rooms with but one jack, and placed jacks meliorate in rooms where there is more than one, specified the patch panel location as well type (built-in, off wall, in-rack), had validation testing done for each jack, ran two additional ethernet runs in each room for an IP photographic camera equally well every bit several outdoor runs for outdoor IP cameras over the whole property, ran 4x ethernet and 2x coax to the puddle house, ran 4x ethernet to each room and 4x coax, 1 set of 2x2x on each side of the room, and ran 8-10x to the garage similar in the 'calculator room'.
One matter I merely thought nigh for retrofits when looking over to the ac duct adjacent to a wall outlet is if you lot want to easily run some wire in an existing business firm, run it with the ac ducting holes or even inside the ducting as some people take washed (but y'all'll need to check local zoning laws on this).
Consider an area for a rack server and the airflow necessary, especially if virtually your demarc. Make sure your demarc too has enough of power outlets and SPACE! Those stupid little leviton boxes don't have plenty room for annihilation and end up just staying open and then I wouldn't go one of those and but have a nice 'board' like they do in commercial environments.
That's all I can think of at the moment.
